For the month of August we will be reading through Tsukiyama's most acclaimed novel: The Samurai's Garden. Set in 1937, just before WWII, the story centers on a twenty-year-old Chinese boy with tuberculosis who is sent to his family's summer house in Japan in the hopes that the sea air will do him good. (I haven't read it yet, that was all I got from the synopsis)
I am excited to read it and delve deep into its themes and historical setting. Flipping through it I noticed that, rather than using the traditional chapter format, it is written in the form of journal entries. I love seeing and studying different storytelling techniques and am interested to see how this will affect the way the story unfolds.
Here is the link if you do not own a copy yet.
I developed a reading plan for myself, mostly because I need a solid plan when reading a book otherwise it takes me well over a month to finish. Here it is if you also have difficulty staying on track:
August 1-7: Pages 1-70
August 8-14: Pages 71-113
August 15-21: Pages 114-159
August 22-28: Pages 160-End
I plan on having my analysis completed and posted here by August 28 (Friday). I will also set up a discussion board so that you all can share your thoughts.
Happy reading!
