After last month’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I found myself wanting more of the eerie light science-fiction and modest gothic horror. I’ve found that some of the best of both of these genres are in the earliest works, and therefore went back to one of the fathers of the genres.
After a bit of searching, I decided this month’s novel will be The Invisible Man, by H. G. Wells.
Like Stevenson’s novella, this month’s novel explores an extraordinary case that falls upon a troubled individual. However, rather than the character being torn between two contrasting personalities, Wells wrote a story in which the character becomes invisible. Having nearly limitless possibilities, the invisible man takes advantage of his new state and wreaks havoc. In this novel, Wells touches on identity, isolation, and community.
This novel is free on Project Gutenberg, so if you do not have a copy be sure to check out their site.
