Seeing Beauty

When did I lose

the love of beauty?

What did I do

who abused me?

When golden suns

crest the horizon

all I see

are the shadows behind them.

Damaged and ruined

is often my claim.

But what if I’m choosing

to see only pain?

The shadows are real

but so is the light.

I know I can feel

the things that are right.

Teach me how

to savor the sunset

change me now

before I plummet

to the darkness that lives

just past the reflection

of the world that I missed

reliving what’s happened.

Sometimes, especially given how plugged in we are to everything anyone has to say, it seems like there's nothing good left in the world. This could be either on a personal level or regarding the larger picture. At times I feel that I've lost the ability to see the good in things that should be good. When the sun's out, all I feel is the heat. When the stars are out, all I see is the darkness around them. It goes on and on, and we can twist just about anything into a negative. But that doesn't mean those things aren't beautiful or good. It means we're choosing not to see the beauty. We're looking at what's wrong when sometimes we need to look instead at what's right. Of course, that doesn't mean we can ignore any problems we have, but sometimes we just need to appreciate life. It's often much better than we make it out to be.

The next time life looks bleak, look for the silver lining, it's there. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
